Gunwharf Quays

I am not a shopping person but today I was persuaded to visit a shopping centre in Portsmouth. The 45 mile drive was worth it for the photo opportunity afforded by the proximity of the shops to Portsmouth's historic naval dockyard. Here is what I saw.

The Spinnaker Tower cost $15M and was five years behind schedule. I am too nervous to take the lift to the observation deck even though the panoramic views would be superb. For miles around it appears on the horizon as a tall ship in full sail.

Superb photographs. You've captured the seafaring charm of a place that is both forboding and inviting. But I'm with you...on the tower - you wouldn't get me up there for all the soft shell crabs in the universe!

I see you,

Nick - thank you for alighting here for glimpses of Portsmouth new and old. The tower was constructed to celebrate the dawn of a new Millennium. The best British endeavours ensured it opened for business FIVE years late!

Finn - I am a sucker for reflections, they are such fun... and safer than a 550 foot climb!

The views from the top of the Spinnaker Tower are truly spectacular judging from TV footage. Cruising at 120 on the bike is somehow different - something about personal control?

JJ - my head in the bore of a cannon holding a miniature Canon! Cool!

Mussolini - i never thought of the tower in those terms but you have a point! And everyone here just thinks it is a giant sail!!

did you get told off when you slipped away to take shots of the ships?
$15 mill sounds a lot even when it is in sterling!
i see that you are now featuring as a cannonball. can i be ball?

in fact with you, finn, jj and me we can be the modern marx quads!!

I like to capture reflections photographically, too. These are fascinating shots. THAT TOWER!!!
No way, would you get me on that lift either! Motorcyles are a different story though.... Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (oops, I think my excitement showed. ;)

GEL - good heavens no! Up that lift? The very idea gives me the shivers. A powerful surge of Yamaha intoxication is a mighty alluring thing. Exciting and potentially addictive, I know...

I agree with Finn...the peek-a-boo reflection shot in both the cannon and the full frame window reflection of you are great. I stopped by here a several days ago to view your lovely shots but didn't have time to comment. I'm glad to see you're still traveling and snapping away. And I don't blame you for not going to the top of the tower. I wouldn't either. That's a bit to high for me. Love your photos sweet brother. I'll keep checking back for more.

I have to say that the shopping centre photos are among the very few of yours which don't make me miss England - quite the opposite in fact. So thanks for making me feel better that I don't live 'back home' anymore.

Boulies - I like the irony of shooting a picture of a cannon with my Canon! I adore reflections and look for them at every opportunity. Glad I'm not the only one with a fear of heights.

There is a giant Ferris wheel on the south bank of the Thames in London. I would love to take a ride on it for the photo opportunities but it is hundreds of feet high and takes 30 or 40 minutes for one rotation.

Perhaps someone will convince me...

R & E - thanks for continuing to stop by and look. Sorry, I should be more dilligent myself.

Ruk - shopping is boring I agree. If it weren't for the pictures you wouldn't see me there. I shop on the internet and only browse for real when on holiday!
